Professional Disposition Statement

Teaching is more than a job, career or profession, it is a passion and a calling. Instructing a student is huge responsibility and an honor. God has created each person with unique gifts, talents, skills and abilities.  As a math teacher, my task is not to make great mathematicians by supplying them with facts and formulas.  My goal is to help mold and shape students to assume a future role in society. It is a huge task to take each child from where they are right now, given their past and current experiences, circumstances and needs, and move them along in their educational journey and quest.  Each day (moment) is an opportunity to discover and learn something new.  If you knew everything, there would be no need to go to school! It is impossible to impart all knowledge and wisdom within the confines and limitations of time and the school classroom environment.  There are also a huge number of external factors that will impact individual student success. Teaching is about helping students “learn how to learn”. School instruction is for a finite period, but learning is a lifelong process. Teaching is like the quote, “give a man to fish and he eats for a day; teach a man to fish and he eats for a lifetime”.  The goal is to make all students independent life-long learners and ignite their passion to find truth.  You have placed your child under my care and supervision and I have an obligation to do my very best provide a safe, loving, inviting and nurturing environment where individual physical, emotional and intellectual needs can met, and then push them to develop and excel every potential and opportunity.

Educators, as professionals, are expected to follow a set of rules, guidelines, expectations and Code of Conduct for behavior, but it must go beyond a list of laws and policies. The Diocese of Raleigh, Grand Canyon University, InTASC, and professional organizations all have a set of values or dispositions. Professional Dispositions are the values, commitments and professional ethics that influence behaviors toward students, families, colleagues and communities and that affect student learning and achievement, motivation and development, as well as the educator’s own professional growth. If sincerely held, dispositions should lead to actions and patterns of professional conduct.  (WSU)

My role and spheres of influence are not confined to the school grounds but extend into the community. My behavior and actions are always under review.
Through self-assessment, monitoring, reflection, student feedback and performance evaluations, it is my goal to exhibit at least 10 attributes of a Leader / Servant Teacher (COE/GCU) such as:
1) High Expectations: I expect all my students to do the very best possible job they can. Goals and objectives are set high.  Shoot for the stars but hitting the moon is pretty good. Through testing, assessments and providing feedback, I will help students in their learning journey.
2) Respect for Diversity: Every person (student, teacher, administrator, worker, parent.) brings a unique set of values and life experiences to the classroom learning community. It is my duty to acknowledge their culture, values, and beliefs and to help others to appreciate each person for who they are.
3) Fairness: Inside and outside the classroom I must administer the rules and policies that are fair and just. I will seek to promote social justice and equity and confidentiality.
4) Professional Conduct: I will conduct myself in manners that reflect the established norms and patterns of behavior as prescribed and recognize the social and professional boundaries that need to be maintained. I will be a model in my community.
5) Reflection: I realize that I am not perfect and also learning and growing. I need to monitor and check my own thoughts, beliefs and values and seek to improve myself. I need to examine my lessons and teaching objectives to insure students are ‘Learning’.
6) Curiosity: I will encourage individual thinking. Students are not just consumers or receivers of facts and data; they are creators, manipulators, composers, authors and inventors making new connections between older patterns.
7) Honesty: Being truthful in what I say and do is critical. A man is judged by his Character. A good name is better than riches (Proverbs 22:1).  Integrity and truth earns respect. Be a “Man of your Word”
8) Compassion: People are not like a machine or asset in a business to be used and abused. School is one small sphere of many interconnected domains. I will be involved in the lives of my students and understand their interests, goals and activities. We all need each other at different times. (1 Corinthians 12:26)
9) Advocacy: When necessary, I will promote positive change in the learning community for the benefit and welfare of others.
10) Dedication: My position as a teacher brings a high work ethic. There are many people who depend on me every day. It is a commitment to be prepared and at the highest level.

Personal Growth:
Realizing I also am learning and growing every day, and new technology, research, student demographics and populations are constantly changing, I must continually seek ways to improve myself. Through workshops, reading, peer feedback and utilizing a network of resources in the learning community, I must try and adapt new things that will lead to an increase in student motivation and performance. I will make mistakes since I am human and imperfect.
You are never too old to improve. I will be completing a Masters in Secondary Education, but I know a degree and more ‘book knowledge’ will not necessarily make me a better teacher.  I must continue to reflect on the thing I have learned and the experiences I have to strive to always improve. Learning is never about an end, but a new beginning.
The more you know and learn about, the more you realize how much you don’t know.

Some of my favorite key verses about teaching are:
1 Corinthians 12:28 And God has placed in the church first of all apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healing, of helping, of guidance, and of different kinds of tongues.
Titus 2:7-8 In everything set them an example by doing what is good. In your teaching show integrity, seriousness 8 and soundness of speech that cannot be condemned, so that those who oppose you may be ashamed because they have nothing bad to say about us.
Romans 12:6-7 We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith; 7 if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach;
Matthew 18:6 “If anyone causes one of these little ones—those who believe in me—to stumble, it would be better for them to have a large millstone hung around their neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea.
Colossians 3:23-24 23 Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, 24 since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.
Proverbs 22:6 Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it.
Deuteronomy 11:19 Teach them to your children, speaking about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.
